A digital initiative usually starts with energy. A pilot is announced, a platform is chosen and a team is put together. Then progress slows. The technology works, and the business still looks the same.<\/p>\n\n

Companies often treat technology and organization as two questions. They are one. New tools arrive in a company that already has routines, roles and incentives, and they do not act on their own. The initiative stalls where the new meets the old.<\/p>\n\n

Why the stall happens<\/h2>\n\n

A broad goal like “become more digital” cannot be owned, measured or tested, while a specific business challenge can. Plan the future state only after mapping who does the work today, who depends on it and what would have to be given up. And treat the visible obstacle with suspicion. Budget and tooling are easy to see. The obstacle behind them is often a decision right, a handoff, or a measure that rewards the old behavior.<\/p>\n\n

Three maps before any project<\/h2>\n\n

The second shows how the work happens today, step by step and person by person. The third names what holds progress back and who has the power to change it. Run a small experiment<\/h2>\n\n

Once the challenge is framed, resist the large program. Pick an experiment small enough to run inside the organization as it is, and meaningful enough to teach you something. Give it a named owner, a clear question and a way to judge the result. The first experiment should teach you about the constraint. Proving that the technology works can wait.<\/p>\n\n

Ask where a different way of working would create value. If you can answer for one team, one process and one customer need, you have a better starting point than a company-wide transformation program.<\/p>\n\n
